Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease that can be passed from cats to humans. Most often, human infection with the organism Toxoplasma gondii results in no discernible signs of illness or mild, flu-like symptoms. The risk of infection is greater for pregnant women and those people with weakened immune systems. Toxoplasmosis can cross the placenta and cause infection for growing babies; the degree of illness for the child depends on when during pregnancy the illness is contracted.
