Do I need to give my dog/cat heartworm preventative medication?

Heartworm disease or dirofilariasis is a serious and potentially fatal disease. It is caused by a blood-borne parasite known as Dirofilaria immitis.

The risk of Heartworm disease in Edmonton, Alberta is relatively low, but if your dog or cat travels to other areas where Heartworm is more common, such as British Columbia or Saskatchewan, you should think about Heartworm medication for your pet. Also, if your pet frequently travels to heavily wooded areas in the summertime, where the mosquito population is higher, you also may want to consider medication. Please call Millwoods East Veterinary Clinic at 780-461-0629 to inquire whether your pet should be put on heartworm medication.
